How to Use Dowsing Rods

Dowsing rods (or divining rods) have had a few different usages throughout history. The most common use for them is to locate underground sources of water, such as wells or water lines. There are even Dowsers on certain government payrolls who locate water sources for their cities using dowsing rods. Originally, dowsers used y-shaped sticks as dowsing rods. They would hold on to each branch of the y, holding the long end of the stick outward. Holding it out from the body, the dowsing rod will pull the person (sort of a magnetic pull) toward the source of water and possibly shake when finding the source. Dowsing rods can also be made out of a light metal, such as copper. These should be an L-shape and should be held lightly in each hand with the long ends facing out from the body.

Another use for dowsing rods comes from the paranormal world. Believers in spirits or paranormal activity use the dowsing rods much in the same way as described above however they are used in finding sources of spiritual or paranormal activity. The rods used for this purpose are often the L-shaped metal rods. One rod is held lightly in each hand, sort of like you are holding candlesticks. While walking, the rods will pull one way or the other, one should follow in the direction it is pointing to and the rods will cross in the presence of paranormal activity (or a water source). It is believed that spirits hold an electric currency and the rods are attracted to that. However, when trying this yourself, the rods will still go towards water sources as well so may not be as accurate in finding spirits alone.

Dowsing rods do not work for just anyone either, that is why certain people are able to make a living out of finding water sources with the rods it takes practice and maybe something else. However, results do vary from person to person. Just like having any contact with the spirit world, some people have claimed to see ghosts or spirits and others may never be perceptible to this phenomena. This may have to do with one’s own electromagnetic pulls to slight psychic abilities. I have tried to use the rods and have had a normal experience with them, mainly crossing when near a water source. When used by a friend, the rods would point in the direction that the person focused on every time. To the point where I would hide things in the room with the person in the other room, and upon returning, the person would focus the rods in the exact area in which the items were hidden.

Although there is so proof that spirits exist using the dowsing rods is fun nonetheless. There is a strong almost magnetic pull that does occur when using the rods and that is evidence of something, be it electro-magnetism or something else, that is the question. Another question arises in that everything makes energy and how to locate and conduct that energy comes in varying forms and in different ways. Either way, dowsing rods are fun to play with and who knows - with the economy being the way it is, maybe the area you live in may be willing to pay you for your services. Government jobs are hard to come by.

Dowsing rods use to work for me but I have not done it in years. Never used them for paranormal.

We had friends that hired people to drill for water and water could not be found. We told them to hire a person that could use dowsing rods and the water was found right away. All of the water on our land has been found by a dowser.

That is really cool! Like I said in the hub, I don't really get much of an efect from them but they go all over the place when my fiance uses them. I guess you have to have an electric touch. I actually found out about them at a paranormal festival and just thought they were interesting but I still can't tell if they are tracking water pipes or spooky ghosts, either way they're fun to play with! Thanks for the comment!

Thanks RKHenry! They're fun to try and you can make your own out of wire coat hangers!

Hello there!

Nice post you have ... now iam just suffering on the net for the drowsing rods for the make and also for how can I use them in the paranormal activity place! I much know about the drowsing rad and its use but I have to know more about them! So its well written and quite good posted here!!

Thanks!

Thank you - the best thing to do is just try them out - you get a feel for how they work after awhile. Plus, you can make your own just take wire (such as wire hanger) and bend like the picture above, hold them loosely like you are holding candlesticks and point them outward from your body. They will cross or point towards a water (or spirit) source. Have fun!

Thanks for writing this. I went to the Myrtle Plantation and someone brought rods to try and find ghosts. I used them in the room where the twins were supposed to have died and they went crazy. It pointed to anything you asked it to even if your eyes were closed or you couldn't see it. It went in circles in the direction you asked or crossed and straightened if you asked. It was very strong for me and it remained for about 45 minutes and then the activity stopped.

That is so cool! You must be perceptive to the paranormal. I don't get a lot out of them when I use them but I have seen them go crazy when others have used them. Where is Myrtle Plantation? It sounds interesting!

I learned about these in building trades class. My teacher told us about how there was a kid in the class that was way good at it. He'd have them throw his keys into a corn field and he found his keys every time on the first try.

That's so cool - I think some people are better are it than others. I don't seem to be as good as it as my fiance - I have hid things in a room and he's been able to find it every time.

In our family we tried the dowsing rods. It worked only with my wife and second daughter. Also the are able to measure the blood pressure by hanging a wedding ring from a string....

Wow - I'll have to try that too- how does the blood pressure measurment work?

I was shown how to make and use metal wire dowsing rods when I was 9 yrs old. I have shown others how to use them as well.

Despite all the negative horsecrap on the net, I know that I can find places where the earth has been disturbed such as septic tanks, underground fuel tanks, where trenches had been dug and filled in etc. It is upsetting that no one has attempted to see what really causes it. Whether it is some electrical field or magnetic field activity etc. We all know that the earth has a giant magnetic field. Does it also run through the upper levels of the soil or crust? Does a disturbance in the normal flow of that magnetism cause the rods to move?

Frankly I know they work. I don't buy the paranormal explanations, And it gripes me that the so called scientific tests have been rigged toward negative preconcieved ends. There is a scientific explanation. It may even be some thing that can be harnessed for use.

In the 1920's there are news reports of motors that ran off the earth's magnetism. One in Pittsburgh, PA and another out west. I have read the archived news clippings but can find no other records. One was alledgedly the subject of a Canadian patent. The motor out west was powerful enough to operate an automobile.

Is anyone aware of any tests done to determine if electricity is a factor?

Nice hub! I'm a dowser and have had great success finding just about anything, from lost items to water (I live on a farm) by using my rods. It is true, some people just have a gift for using them. As for ghost hunting, you can use an EMF meter while using the dowsing rods and get a reading with both, so I believe there is a connection between the two (electromagnetic activity and paranormal activity).

Has always worked for me,but educated people are usually doubtful about such practices that served the world for thousands of years before MIT and NASA

I have been using them for a few weeks, and quickly found that I could do other things, I have never tried to find water yet.

I have started to log the alphabet with them and also numbers up to ten so far.

The rods predicted when my daughter would move into her new home. We didn't take much notice of the date the rods gave me,especially as my daughter didn't have the cash to move yet. She has put a deposit down on house in the date, not exactly moved out yet but close enough for us.

I have found lost objects, I have asked the rods also, who I can trust, ie work collegues, boss (no trust in my boss)

I haven't tried lottery numbers, but I will ask the rods first if I can.

I am looking into going to a dowsing group, but at the moment I attend a spiritual church, and they are very helpful.

Don't be afraid to use them, but I always ask 4 things.

May I dowse?

Can I dowse?

Should I dowse?

Are you a good honest spirit?

If answer is No, try another time.

I ask the rods a couple of times throughout an exercise if it is good honest spirit, just to be on safe side, I also say Thank you after every 'answer' and 'Please' before ever question. I believe it's my spirit guide coming thru, but I think I could ask other spirits, to come thru also.

i had an experience with the dowsing rods, when i went to san antonio tx, on a "ghost hunt".the ghost hunt was a joke except when the tour guid brought out these dowsing rods.when i got these rods mine was the only ones that were going crazy they kept swinging in circles fast,as if they were trying to hit my face.but when i asked it a question it would make one complete turn and then point to where i wanted it to.i pass it to my husband and it didnt act crazy as it did with me.when i took it back,it went back to turning in circles the more i held it the faster it would turn, people were looking at me like i was crazy.ive always been sensitive to the paranormal since i was a child,my birth mother is the same way,but i was wondering what does it mean when the dowsing rods react to someone like that.it was my first time using the rods.if someone knows anything please let me know.thanks-

Does anyone know why when I use the dowsing rods they work but when handed to me mother one rod always touches her and the other points at me?
